Before You Buy
Before you can get to the fun part – buying your floral vine rug – there are a few factors to keep in mind to ensure you’ll be pleased with your purchase.
Size
Sizing is perhaps the most important thing you need to figure out before your purchase. Vine rugs come in a range of shapes – rectangular, oval, circular, octagonal or long runner. The right shape depends on the shape of your room and what area you want the rug to cover. For instance, if you want to use the rug for a dining area in your kitchen, a circular or oval rug will look great. If you want the rug to cover the whole room, think rectangular.
With your desired shape in mind, start measuring. For rectangular rugs, put a piece of paper in each corner where you would like the rug’s edge to hit. Measure between the papers and then match those measurements to the manufacturer’s pre-set sizes. This technique works for oval and runners as well. Note that you can special order rugs in specific sizes, but usually a pre-cut rug will come close enough to work and will save you a significant amount of money.
For circular rugs, place a piece of paper where you would like the rug’s edge to hit and then measure from the center of where the rug will be to that paper. Double that result to get the diameter of the rug you need and again find your best manufacturer’s fit.
If you want the rug to fill the room, simply measure the room and deduct about 12 inches to create a border for the rug.
Materials
Vine rugs come in a variety of synthetic and natural materials. Synthetic material rugs tend to be less expensive, but natural materials are the best choice if allergies are a concern in your family.
Padding
You will need a pad to keep your vine rug in place. The pad is usually not included, so remember this extra expense when you shop for your rug.
Wear and Tear
Rugs can take a beating in high traffic areas like hallways and kitchens. Consider Scotchgard treatments to protect your rugs in these areas. Synthetic material rugs tend to hold up better in high traffic zones.
Style
Last but not least, consider style. Since floral vine rugs come in so many variations, they are compatible with many design styles. However, they do have a modern feel and can often be somewhat casual. For this reason, floral vine rugs can be difficult to incorporate into traditional and formal rooms.
